From the Maslanka Archive – No. 4, Stephen & Andrea Steele Visit David & Alison in Missoula (2008)

From the Maslanka Archive features media and stories of David’s life and work. Did you work with David? Please consider contributing material.

It’s time for another edition of From the Maslanka Archive. We are actively building the Archive, but it won’t be ready for public viewing for a while. In the meantime, we wanted to show off some great items we’ve already collected.

We also wanted to inspire YOU to help grow the collection. We would love to feature you in an upcoming edition! Simply provide us with photos, video, audio, or stories of your time together and you may find them on the front page.

This week, we are excited to feature pictures from the outside of David’s residence in Missoula, Montana. In 1990, David moved with his wife, Alison, and his children Steve, Matthew, and Kathryn from New York City to the small rural town of Missoula. Located on the western edge of Montana, Missoula is approximately 45 miles from the Idaho border and is home to the University of Montana.

These pictures were taken by Stephen & Andrea Steele during a visit in June 2008 (following their wedding in Illinois). As you look through them, one gets a sense of the western beauty that David and his family enjoyed for many years. You can see Alison and some of her horses (yes, she rode bareback!) You can even see Andrea riding!

Montana was a very special place for David and his career as a freelance composer. Symphony No. 3 and Symphony No. 4 were among the first works to be written here, and David spoke of this land as inspirational:

The mountains and the sky are a living presence. Animal and Indian spirits still echo strongly in this land, and these elements have found their way into my music.

The David Maslanka Foundation will one day house all archival materials in David’s studio (in Missoula), and it will serve as a reading room to all that wish to come.

A Very Special Thanks to Stephen & Andrea Steele for providing these images.

Would you like to be featured in an upcoming edition of From the Maslanka Archive? It’s easy! Please send us anything you have (picture, audio, video, concert poster, concert program, correspondence with David, etc.) and we will feature you!
