From the Maslanka Archive features media and stories of David’s life and work. Did you work with David? Please consider contributing material.
It’s time for another edition of From the Maslanka Archive. We are actively building the Archive, but it won’t be ready for public viewing for a while. In the meantime, we wanted to show off some great items we’ve already collected.
We also wanted to inspire YOU to help grow the collection. We would love to feature you in an upcoming edition! Simply provide us with photos, video, audio, or stories of your time together and you may find them on the front page.
This week, we are excited to feature an address David gave on matters of tempo and dynamics from a masterclass given at Illinois State University. David was in residency with Stephen K. Steele and the Illinois State University Wind Symphony, and he presented a masterclass with some students on his Quintet for Winds No. 3.
David spoke on the importance of not being afraid of tempo or going to extremes in dynamics.
“The reality is that once you allow yourself to think (the tempo) is possible, then it happens. If you don’t allow yourself to think that it’s possible, it doesn’t happen. The blockage is not with the fingers or the technique but with the ability to conceive.” – David Maslanka
Watch below as David gives his full remarks.
A very special thanks to Steve Steele for sharing this address with the David Maslanka Foundation.
