Program Note
This brief set of variations was written for my friends Andrea and Steve Steele for their wedding in 2008, and performed for them by our mutual friend, flutist Kim Risinger. The chorale melody “Christ is erstanden” (Christ is Risen) serves as the theme. This melody also opens my Song Book for Flute and Wind Ensemble, performed and recorded by Kim Risinger and the Illinois State University Wind Symphony, conducted by Steve Steele. A Song of Coming Awake is something of a virtuosic concert piece, but with an underlying quiet and delicacy.
