Program Note
Piano Song was composed in 1978 at the MacDowell Colony under the influence of the serene natural landscape of the colony grounds in Peterborough, NH. The music is a floating impressionist fantasia with direct roots in the American Impressionism of the early 20th century. This music was written at a time when the dominant thought of total serialism in music was being challenged by the Minimalists, and signaled for me, my own deep interest in the expressive potential of the tonal roots of our musical language, an interest that has only deepened in the years since.
