Program Note
Richard Beale wrote “Hymn to Sophia, Holy Wisdom,” a set of seven poems that became songs in my Mass for solo voices, choruses, and wind ensemble. The poem “The Hungry Heart” was written by Beale in Tucson, AZ in April of 1996 as a response to the splendid Sonoran Desert, and to the premiere performances of the Mass.

visiting prickly pear blossoms
Souls visiting home.Chickadee, cheer cheer
two descending notes
ears opening to desert splendorSun devils kissing the sky,
veiling the cobalt sun.
The ardor of earth
returning star-ward
There is no escape.We belong in shadows
that shelter prairie dogs
and spiders and to octopus agave
trailing its giant thorn through wind.Such hunger! Delicious plenty!
The edge of the living world,
sifting our breath through
extreme poverty of expectation,
the sand and the stones of God.
