National-renowned percussionists Cameron Leach will join Matthew Salvaggio and the Euclid Symphony Orchestra to play Séjourné's Concerto for Marimba and Strings. The Festival at Sandpoint Chamber Music Series presents the Canna Corda Trio featuring Mika Hood (cello), Dr. Michael Keepe (saxophone) and David Brewster (piano) in their debut performance. Hailing from the pristine beauty of the Inland Northwest, Canna Corda (Reed and String) was formed in the Spring of 2019. All members are accomplished soloists in their own right. Together, they form an ensemble with breathtaking beauty of tonal colors. Working with composers from across the globe, their programs feature an eclectic mix of music from passionate tangos, to cutting edge contemporary. This concert will feature the members as soloists, duos, and together as a trio. They will offer their insights into the music, the composers, and the group’s relationship with both, providing a personal and memorable concert experience, for all ages and backgrounds. The program will begin with the World Premiere of “Primeira Neo-Valsa” (First New Waltz) for tenor saxophone, cello and piano by Brazilian composer Andersen Vianna. This beautiful piece blends the tenor saxophone and cello voices to create an intimate feel and sound that dance together as one. Other highlights will include a two wonderful tangos (one duo, one trio) composed and arranged for this group by British composer Graham Lynch, and the powerful trio “Out of this World” by the late Missoula, Montana composer, David Maslanka, and solo works from Ravel’s “Habanera” to the vaudeville saxophone classic “Valse Vanité” by Rudy Wiedoeft.

Vienna-based orchestra "Akademische Bläserphilharmonie Wien" and its conductor Andreas Simbeni aim to perform high-quality, remarkable original compositions for symphonic wind orchestra. It regularly performs in Vienna's renowned concert halls, i.e. the Musikverein Wien or Konzerthaus Wien. In 2019 the orchestra celebrates its 25th anniversary on 15th December in the great hall of Musikverein Wien, also named the "Golden Hall" because of its opulent decor and colour scheme. At the concert the Akademische Bläserphilharmonie Wien performs David Maslanka's "Traveler", Michael Mikulka's "Concerto for Trumpet" with famous soloist Thomas Gansch, as well as Alex Poelman's Symphony No 2 "The Odyssey" with large choir.

The Texas A&M University Wind Symphony, under the direction of Timothy Rhea, will perform the final symphony written by composer David Maslanka on Friday (Feb. 28) at 7 p.m. in Rudder Theatre. The concert also will feature two guest conductors: University of Florida Director of Bands David Waybright and Texas A&M Director of Orchestras Travis Almany. The concert will include Procession of the Nobles by Nicholas Rimsky-Korsakov; Postcard by Frank Ticheli; Toccata Marziale by Ralph Vaughan Williams; and DR III Honnormarsj by Erling Mostad. Maslanka’s Symphony No. 10: The River of Time will end the performance. A native of New Bedford, Mass., Maslanka attended the Oberlin College Conservatory and spent a year at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. He did masters and doctoral study in composition at Michigan State University. Well known and respected for his compositions for winds, Maslanka was a freelance composer in Missoula, Montana, from 1990 until his death in 2017. Among his more than 150 works are 50 pieces for wind ensemble. Maslanka completed a residency with the Texas A&M University Bands in February 2017, only months before his death. Many of the Texas A&M Wind Symphony musicians were present during his residency. Symphony No. 10 was commissioned for a consortium that included the Texas A&M Wind Symphony. SIOUX CENTER—The Dordt University bands will present a concert titled “Shall We Gather at the River?” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, in B.J. Haan Auditorium in Sioux Center. The Campus-Community Band and Wind Symphony will perform music by Chance, De Haan, Agapkin, Boyer, Maslanka and Posthuma. The central work for the concert is David Maslanka’s Symphony No. 9, Movement 1, based on the traditional Christian hymn, “Shall We Gather at the River?” The Wind Symphony also will perform “My Shepherd will Supply My Need,” a work by Dordt graduate Jonathan Posthuma.

The Midwinter Clinic is MMEA’s annual professional development conference. The state’s largest gathering of music educators features nationally-recognized headliners, a wide variety of performances and informances, sessions from area clinicians, an Exhibit Hall, and tons of networking. My name is Erin Holmes and I am the Director of Bands at Farmington High School in Farmington, MN. Our Wind Ensemble has been selected to perform at Minnesota Music Educators Association (MMEA) for our Mid-Winter Clinic. The title of our program is called Unrest. Here is a description of our program: “Less than six months into the year, 2020 has proven to be a challenging environment not only for learners and musicians - but for our nation as a whole. Through music, our program will honestly reflect the unique challenges of a world placed at a standstill as the result of a pandemic, while also addressing the open wounds of our country’s continued struggle with equity and justice." In a world overcome with agitation, “Unrest” will also serve to heal: to be a manifesto for comfort, hope, and peace in an uncertain world. Our program aims to bring people together around music - and a common social cause. Program will include Give Us This Day, Mvt. 2.
Performance of David Maslanka’s ‘Concerto for Saxophone Quartet and Wind Ensemble’ (2012) by Kebyart Ensemble (saxophone quartet) and Barcelona Symphonic Band, conducted by José Rafael Pascual-Vilaplana. The concert also includes two more pieces by Maslanka for wind ensemble: ‘Mother Earth’ (2003) and ‘Give Us This Day’ (2006). The BMB has invited, on this occasion, the prominent Catalan saxophone quartet Kebyart Ensemble, recently named ECHO Rising Stars artist and which is quickly becoming one of the most interesting chamber ensembles on the international scene.
CASPER, Wyo. — Members of the 67th U.S. Army Band “Wyoming’s Own” will perform with two Casper College music groups at 7 pm Wednesday, April 21. The free concert is open to the public and will be held at the Wheeler Concert Hall located in Casper College’s Music Building. The concert will include performances from the Casper College Collegiate Chorale, under the direction of Zachary Vreeman, DMA, and the Casper College Concert Band, under the direction of Joshua R. Mietz, DMA. “We are proud to host a free concert of new and beloved music for choir and concert band,” Mietz said in the college’s announcment. The concert will include music by David Maslanka, Felix Mendelssohn, and Pietro Mascagni. “The highlight of the evening will be the combined choir and band performance of music by Eric Whitacre,” the college’s announcement states. American composer David Maslanka composed extensively in virtually every genre but is especially known for his many compositions for wind instruments. His works for wind ensemble, are frequently performed around the world. Additionally, his chamber music for winds in various configurations has established itself in the repertoire for its diversity, complexity, and powerful emotional content. Even at its most technical, Maslanka’s music has at its core lyricism and tonal harmony. He composed a number of works featuring the bassoon, including three solo works and another seven chamber pieces in various configurations. Join Dr. Conor Bell, instructor of bassoon at Auburn University, for a lecture exploring Maslanka's life, compositional process, and his many works for bassoon. This lecture is taking place at the International Double Reed Society's 2nd Virtual Convention. The entire conference is accessible free of charge on the IDRS website.

From the Missoula Chamber Music Collective: The Missoula Chamber Music Collective strives to feature musicians from our community. There is no better way to kick off the season than with the feature of Songbook, by David Maslanka. Maslanka lived in Missoula for the last 27 years of his life and became a well known member of our community. His works for winds and band are especially well known. A more intimate duo setting, Songbook uses only alto saxophone and marimba. To continue in the theme of songs, Andrew Beall's Song of 'Almah sets the text of the Song of Solomon to music for soprano and marimba. Brad Mehldau is known for his Grammy-winning piano trio, but he also collaborates with the best singers, writing original songs for Renee Fleming, Anne Sophie von Otter and Ian Bostridge. We will share one selection from his setting of Rainier Maria Rilke's Book of Hours. Finally, in Come Down Heavy, Evan Chambers transforms well-known American folksongs into a thrilling piece for violin, saxophone and piano.

From Lancaster Online: Join The College of Wooster's bands for "An American Child," an immersive program of music and poetry that explores the experience of how growing up in the United States has evolved over the past century. The concert will feature two featured student artists, soprano Anya Smith ’24 and speaker Cam Love ’25, who will present selected poetry by Maya Angelou, Amanda Gorman, and Dudley Randall. The concert will include the music of David Maslanka, Eric Whitacre, Kimberly Archer, Evan Williams, Adolphus Hailstork, and John Corigliano. Directed by Jeffrey D. Gershman, the band is the premier wind ensemble at the College and has entertained audiences nationwide during its annual spring tour since 1976. Rooted in a deep belief in the importance of inclusive programming, Scot Symphonic Band performances draw both from the cornerstones of the wind literature and the finest contemporary works. The ensemble’s distinctive uniforms, which consist of kilts with hand-sewn pleats made from the College’s MacLeod tartan plaid, represent Wooster’s Scottish Presbyterian heritage. Gershman is in his second year as the Director of Bands at Wooster. He also serves as the director of the Wooster Concert Band, assistant director of the Scot Marching Band, and teaches courses in conducting and music education. The concert will feature David Maslanka's piece "Illumination" and his later work "The Seeker". This will mark the first public performance of "The Seeker" in Taiwan. Taking “The Seeker” as the central concept, the theme of "tracing light" will be prominent, culminating in a performance of the Copland Clarinet Concerto with Jun-Yen Lai, Associate Principal Clarinetist of the National Symphony Orchestra.
