Igor Stravinsky Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments, Gregory Hayes, soloistKevin Krumenauer For Scott (world premiere)Yasuhide Ito As Time is Passing On (US premiere)David Maslanka Symphony No. 10 (East Coast Premiere) A tribute to the late Scott Smedinghoff, whose brilliant pianism lit up concerts by the wind ensemble and others, this program includes three premieres—world, US and East Coast!—and, for the work by Ito, a guest chorus of singers from Vermont and New Hampshire who made music with Smedinghoff during his life. Marsit leads student and select community musicians through an exciting array of repertoire for the wind ensemble, from the 19th century to today, including many world premieres. The ensemble’s inventive thematic programming is often coupled with educational components and projects to engage young musicians and audiences alike.

Find out moreOver 200 high school band members come to Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois to spend three days with clinicians Gary Green (Miami, ret), Gary Smith (Illinois, ret.), Matthew Maslanka (guest composer/clinician), Mike Fansler (Western Illinois University Director of Bands) and Matt Thomas (Western Illinois University Associate Director of Bands). The event includes rehearsals with clinicians, masterclasses and sectionals with the WIU Studio faculty, an Honor Recital with student musicians and six concerts. The WIU Wind Ensemble, under the director of Dr. Mike Fansler, will perform David Maslanka's manuscript of Symphony No. 10, "The River of Time" on Friday, February 22, 2019 at 7:30pm (CST) and will be live streamed. The Berlin High School Symphonic Wind Ensemble will be performing David Maslanka's 'Concerto for Trombone and Wind Ensemble' with Stephen Trenier as our guest soloist. We are fortunate to be hosting Matthew Maslanka, David's son, as our resident artist for this concert. The Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble will also be performing this evening. Admission is free, and the concert begins at 7:00pm.
